OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM

When we had our first baby, one of the first books we got was LOVE YOU FOREVER by Robert Munsch.  It's a must have.  I think Garrett was 3 or 4 years old before I could make it through the book without crying!

He was barely two, Isabelle was a baby, and we were reading this particular book.  When the child in the book is two, it describes the destructive things he does, then the mom says, "this kid is driving me crazy!"

Garrett looks at me, with a look of excitement and discovery, and says, "like you say Mommy!  You say 'driving me crazy'!"

Wow, I didn't even know he picked up on stuff like that!  He was tiny!  We laughed about it, and it became a joke between us.

Dr. Phil says kids believe everything we, the parents, say, even if it is about them.

Intellectually this might be a new idea to you, but I know experientially it isn't.

How many grown men do you know who still struggle with insecurities as an adult, because their fathers made them feel stupid as a kid?  What self-criticizing tapes do you play over in your mind that are in your mother's voice?

Although this often provokes me to pray for my children's healing from my own parenting, I can't help but think this would be a helpful attitude to have towards our Father.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 19:14)

What if you trusted what God said about you as a child would?

He says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Ps. 139:14)  Kids think everything about their bodies are neat.  Even the parts we don't want them to be so interested in.

He says you were created for a purpose before the world began. (Eph. 2:10)  Kids think they can do anything.  They dream of being astronauts, ballerinas, and presidents.

He says you are fully equipped. (2 Pet.1:3)  Kids think if you want something you go get it.  Or if you don't have it you ask for it from someone who does.

He says we have nothing to fear because nothing can separate us from His love and protection. (Rom. 8:31-39)  Kids think their daddy is stronger than any super hero.

MEDITATE ABOUT IT

What things does God say are true about you that you do not believe?  What lies do you believe instead?

What are the origins of these lies?  How far into your past can you trace them?

How would your life be different if you believed God's truth instead?

PRAY ABOUT IT

Father God, You have given us so many rich and wonderful gifts that we refuse to accept.  Forgive us for refusing the abundant life You intend for us to have.  Give us the insight to recognize lies we base our lives upon, and the courage to replace them with Your truth.  Some of the lies we believe are deep seeded into our past, and very painful to remove.  Comfort us and strengthen us.  Guide us where You would have us go.

LIVE IN IT

"Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4)

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10)
